The surgeon who drew his tools

Al-Zahrawi illustrates two hundred instruments and techniques still recognisable to surgeons today.

In tenth-century Córdoba, a surgeon did something almost no one before him had bothered to do: he drew his tools. Abu al-Qasim al-Zahrawi — known to Latin Europe as Albucasis — closed his great medical encyclopedia with a chapter on surgery in which some two hundred instruments were named, described, and pictured, so that a student far away and long after could recognise the blade in the drawing and the reason for its shape. Many of those shapes — forceps, the scalpel, the retractor, the speculum — are still recognisable to a surgeon today.

It is important to state plainly what al-Zahrawi did and did not do. He did not invent surgery, nor most surgical instruments, from nothing. His surgical treatise rests substantially on earlier authorities — above all the seventh-century Byzantine physician Paul of Aegina, whose Epitome had gathered and transmitted Greek surgical practice from Galen, Oribasius and others [2][3]. Al-Zahrawi cites and builds on this inheritance. What he added was organisation, clinical experience, and — decisively — illustration.
