Bi Sheng in China, then metal type in Korea, print books four centuries before Gutenberg.

1. Introduction

Long before a single German press stamped its first page, a Chinese artisan named Bi Sheng cut characters into clay and discovered that type, once made, could be broken apart and set again. From that idea in Song China grew wooden type on revolving tables and, in Korea, characters cast in metal — the technology that printed the Jikji, the oldest surviving metal-type book, some four centuries before Gutenberg.

Movable type never displaced woodblock printing in East Asia the way the press did in Europe. Bi Sheng cut each character into moist clay, fired the pieces hard like porcelain, and set them onto an iron plate coated with resin, wax, and paper ash [1][2]. Wang Zhen later used carved wooden type, arranging the pieces on rotating round tables ordered by rhyme so a compositor could spin the character he needed into reach [5][6].
